State bond supports new manufacturing jobs on Eastern Shore
FoodSwing to use funds to build out, equip former Icelandic seafood plant
BALTIMORE, MD  Wed, Jul 16, 2008

Governor Martin O’Malley announced today that Maryland has issued a $10 million private activity bond to assist FoodSwing Inc., a Pennsylvania-based food manufacturer and packager that recently purchased the former Icelandic seafood plant in Cambridge. The bond, issued through the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development’s Maryland Industrial Development Financing Authority, is being used by the company to build out and equip its new 200,000 square-foot facility, which will house the company’s packaging operations. The company expects to hire 100 new fulltime employees in the first year, with plans to grow to at least 250 employees in three years.

“FoodSwing’s decision to locate in Maryland speaks to the quality of our workforce, our enviable location and the positive business climate we provide to companies looking to relocate or expand,” said Governor O’Malley. “We look forward to working with FoodSwing to ensure their continued growth and help maximize job opportunities on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.”

“I am truly excited that FoodSwing has chosen Dorchester County to expand their operations. Dorchester County is appreciative of the partnership between DBED and the Dorchester County Economic Development Department,” said William V. Nichols, Dorchester County Council President. “We look forward to many more opportunities to partner to bring jobs to Dorchester County and Maryland.”

“We will continue to work with the business and assist them with their growth and expansion in the future to create additional jobs,” said Keasha Haythe, Dorchester County’s Economic Development Director. “FoodSwing has shown that Dorchester County is truly a great place to do business and this would not have happened without the great partnership that exists between Dorchester County and Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.”

“Cambridge is ideally suited along the central Atlantic seaboard allowing us to deliver our products north as far as New England and south as far as Florida within a day’s delivery time,” said Roger Hoffman, FoodSwing’s President and CEO. “The Eastern Shore provides us terrific access to local produce and other food ingredients while allowing us to draw on a local workforce well suited to meet our employment needs. The ample availability of water and waste treatment capacity is particularly helpful to our food manufacturing operation. We are grateful to the State of Maryland for their support of our move to Dorchester County and look forward to building a strong, growing employment base in the months and years to come.”

FoodSwing was founded in 1999 in New York City as a turnkey outsource for celebrity chefs and specialty food retailers who wished to create and manufacture food products in glass jars. Today, the company is the only US private-label manufacturer that offers products in both glass and aseptic packaging. The company operates as a strategic production partner to process, package, and deliver custom formulas. FoodSwing is committed to using state-of-the-art for its growing list of regional, national, and international customers.
